Playing with them SOMETIMES works, and that's about it. That playing games makes your Neopet happy is a MYTH.

Also try putting them in the neolodge, going on tours, roundabouts etc. with them (untried and untested)

Ya you play with the pet, or you can teke him to the neolodge for a couple days and they'll be happy when they return!!

Buy toys than play with him or them. Play games.
