You've picked a bad day for your journey. I've got the timetable in front of me right now and according to the little symbol there appears to be a shortage of rolling stock that day and they are only offering a piggyback service. I had to use that once and it took well over 3 days, the bloke carrying me was a little out of shape. We did however strike up a great relationship and still correspond from time to time. If memory serves me correctly it cost 3d, I think there has been a price increase since then and decimalisation of course. Have a safe journey. Hope that helps

Scotrail is operating buses from Dumfries to Carlisle, so... you must change to a Virgin trains service there. After that, the trip takes 2 hours with no more changes (total time of trip is around 3h 30). Buses leave Dumfries at 8:53, 11:49, 12:58, 13:55, 17:35.

There is work on the line that day so part of your journey will be by bus:

Bus departure 11.49 from Dumfries to Carlisle
Train departure 13.10 from Carlisle to Manchester Piccadilly

If you book in advance (as soon as possible, they are subject to availability) you can get two single tickets for £28.

If not the "walk on" fare is £70 for two singles
