Usually lessons progress in difficulty as you keep moving up. It is always better to remind students what they learnt the last time and what are the important things they should remember in order to understand the current lesson.Reviewing tests sequencing , memory , understanding and inference skills
Also, many students dont really go back home and read up the completed lessons. By reviewing , you are reminding them of what we have done before so they can atleast follow some of the new lesson.
Last but not the least, the students who were not able to attend your last lesson will know what they missed and will hopefully try to go back and read up.

Speaking strictly for myself, I will generally do a review of my last lesson before moving on for a couple of reasons. To answer any last minute questions, to refresh student memories, and to makeup anything I possibly missed.

It's the simple rule of thumb, practice makes perfect. Well reviewing is practice in remembering what we learned earlier. Because when we move onto something else, we tend to forget what we learned earlier on. Reviewing helps refresh things and bring it back to the forefront.

From a teacher's point of view, previewing before a lesson lets the teacher know how knowledgeable the students are about the topic. It is also a way to let students know what the lesson will be.

From a student's point of view, it lets you know what is expected of you by the end of the lesson. It's sort of like those preveiws of movies before they come out. It sparks your interest.

Because most lessons are built based on prior teachings. If a person reviews prior material, comprehending the new lesson is much easier and it will fit into place.

To refresh yourself on WHAT your are supposed to be teaching.
Hopefully, you can make it interesting to your pupils.... and not do the same ole crap all the time. Kids learn more when they are interested and having fun. So use your "review" time to try and think of ways to make the lesson exciting and interesting for them.
