I personally do not believe in the existence of an omnipotent Deity. I prefer Thoreau's notion of an "Over Soul" or the eastern Tao.

The Omnipotence Paradox is a good way to counter the existence of such a Deity, especially when paired with Hawking's theory that time and space are infinite (that would answer where everything came from).

I just want to add that any belief in the Christian-Judeo God's benevolence is not only foolish, but unfounded. Just a way for our weak species to comfort itself. If Yahweh is so powerful, and assuming the Bible wasn't written by drugged-out zealots, why did he drown all of creation rather than just snap his fingers to fix what was essentially his fowl up? If he really is the great God of Love, why didn't he just create a peaceful man, capable of living in a peaceful society? He should have noticed he'd f'ed up about the time Cane killed Abel. He must really be as Al Pacino described him in "Devil's Advocate": just some sick kid with a magnifying glass.

*Note*
If I have hurt anyone, which I'm sure I have, I apologize. I'm just trying to ask the right questions and open some eyes to what are very obvious facts. Just know that every time I see references by religious extremists to their Deity it causes me the same pain as they now feel reading my answer.

God is a figure upon which many others view as being a savior or to pray well being upon. Many religions such as Atheism, depict that we are in charge of what ever happens, happens. Others like the Muslim religion look at their God as the reason they are alive, such as offering food and well-being. But Catholicism among others offer Cathedrals, Mosks, and Temples as a place to worship and thank their God. Others then believe that God is universal and should be practiced everywhere other than cathedrals. In my opinion, God only creates and controls our faith in ourselves, and offers a system kind of like karma. If you do good things, God will send good things back. I do believe that their is a higher power out there, may it be robots, aliens, other people, or God all-mighty, just know someone or thing is looking over us 24/7. When determining the reality of something you must ask yourself only two questions. Do people believe in this thing? Does this thing have a visible affect on the world?

People believe in God(s)
God(s) have an effect on the world
Therefore, God(s) is/are real

probably not, but in any case this is not an interesting question as the existence of god cannot be disproved.

The statement "god exists" is functionally equivalent to the statement "there exists a phrase that when spoken properly makes the speaker invisible".

Neither statement is falsifiable.

Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. IS THERE A GOD beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.(Isaiah 44:8).
Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth:for I am God, and there is none else.(Isaiah 45:22).

No Idea.
I prefer to think not, considering all the evil being done in the name of one God or another.

Why would you spend time asking this question and so many people spend time answering it if there were not a "God shaped" hole in our spirit? He loves you and made you to ask this question and is waiting for your response.
