I am insured through my employer, who will not, under any circumstances (won't let me pay premiums), insure a newborn (maternity care is covered, but not newborn).
My husband's insurance at work will, but it costs $400 a month. Add that to an expected childcare bill of $600-$800. . . One of us would be working almost exclusively to insure and have someone else raise our baby! (Add $950 for rent, among other things. . . )
Has anyone been through anything like this? I'm sure we make too much to get any help with insurance through the state (I don't want to do that, really, even if we could).
It is absolute BS that it's easier financially to have a baby if you're working for minimum wage and get tax-payer money. :(
There must be a way to get reasonable insurance for an infant. . . a month of all those bills and we'd be living behind a Taco Bell.
Sigh

It's actually more cost effective for both of you to go under your husband's insurance plan.

Figure this - an average cost of a doctor's visit is anywhere between $75-125.00 (My doc charges $98.) Add the baby checkups, immunizations, and not to mention when they get sick - you'll be paying more out of pocket than you would under the insurance plan.

Group insurance through an employer is actually the best way to go, as you get a more fuller coverage than through any other plan.

If you or your husband are self employed in any way (side jobs, seamstress, ebay seller, etc) - you should try getting an insurance plan through Mega Life & Health. Try nase.org - (nationall association for the self-employed). You can also try afs.org (Americans for financial security) - they also use mega health & life.

Under these plans, you will have a lower premium, however a higher deductible. Immunizations are covered under some of their new plans.

Both companies will assist you and your husband of claiming your premiums, and out of pocket medical expenses on your taxes. This does include over the counter meds, and bandaids for the entire family. This will give you a bigger tax break, than your standard deduction. In a way, it's kind of like having the government help pay you for your premiums!

I think it's illegal (depending on which state you are in) for them to not let you insure your newborn if you are already on the insurance. I would call somebody in your company like human resources.
If that fails, try medicaid. Even though it is pretty hard to get if you and your husband gross more than 2000 a month.
If none of those work, you may have to go through a private insurance company to get a lower rate. or you will just have to pay the 400 bucks..

Did you try looking at getting an individual plan? Like through BC/BS? I would find an independent insurance agent and check out what the premium costs would be. In some situations a group plan can be higher. BTW - my family has an individual health plan (not through an employer) and it costs us around $4500 per year. (2 nontobacco adults and 1 child) Good luck!

Check into medicaid. My kids were on it until they turned 1. I'm pretty sure it's like that most places.
