Stick shift driving is about feeling the condition of the engine and putting the car in the right gear to cope with it. Start off in 1st gear, and as you get to the upper reaches of 'healthy' engine noise, the car will start to feel like it wants to do more. Push in the clutch with your foot and pull the stick into the position for 2nd gear, then bring your foot up gently and you should get the benefit of being in a higher gear - the car will go faster more readily and happily. And so on up and down the gears. The slower you go, the lower the gear. If you're in 3rd gear and you come to a steep hill, you might want to change down to 2nd to give you extra pull. Driving stick demands a thing called "clutch control", which you don't need in an automatic - it just means controlling what happens by using the clutch pedal.
As others have said, maybe find a fairly empty parking lot and have a go.

Find an empty parking lot to practice in. Get in your car. Fasten your seatbelt. Push the clutch(the peddle furthest to the left) with your left foot and hold it down. Push the middle peddle (the brake) with your right foot and hold it down. Put your key in the igniton and start the car. Put the car in first gear if its not already there. If the emergency brake is engaged, disengage it. Now your feet should still be pressing down on the clutch and the brake. Take your foot off the brake. The car should still be running and it should not be rolling because you need to start learning on a flat surface (parking lot). Now slowly push down on the gas with your right foot while lifting up on the clutch with your left foot. This is the most dificut part and takes a lot of practice but with time you will be able to master this skill. Once you can get the car going in first gear its time to accelearate to get into second gear. Get the car going about 15 mph and push down on the clutch now shift the car into second gear. now slowly push down on the gas and let off the clutch. It works the same for every gear after that.

I bought my first stick shift and learned how to drive it on the way home. If I can figure it out any one can. If you ask a friend who has one to teach you, you will end up so stressed out it will delay you learning it. Just get yourself one and have a parent or friend teach you in your own car.

I couldn't get a stick shift out of the driveway, stick to an automatic. You don't have to work so hard to drive it.

You should find someone to teach you. One thing I can tell you for certain... no amount of reading or asking questions on the internet is going to help you out on that one. I think everyone should know how to drive one... and it's actually quite simple... it just takes time to learn it.

You just gotta get in it and learn. There are no real directions that you can read. Practice.
