If you're in Sydney, you should check out areas like darling harbor and the Rocks.
Of course, you go see the opera house, and while you're over there, you should go see the gardens (they have flying foxes!). Hyde park is also a good place for walking/ chilling.
For shopping, you should go see the architecture of the QVB (queen victoria building). Also, the mall in darling harbor is a good place to shop. There's also a really awesome asian restaurant on the right side of the harbor (looking out at it from the imax) that's, if I remember, near the bridge.
You could climb the Harbor bridge, I'm sure it'd be awesome, but I didn't get to it.
Beaches around Sydney:
Bondi- It's a great beach, but there's not much ambiance around. I recommend the hike from Bondi to Coogie (sp?)... it's a few km, but it has great vistas and smaller, more private beaches.
Manly- This is my favorite, it has a really cute shopping strip nearby. The atmosphere is awesome (try the brioche at the french bakery) and there's things to do outside of hanging on the beach. The beach itself is smaller than bondi, but it's adorable and easier to get to than Bondi (take the ferry from circular quay).
We were in Oz for 3 weeks as well, and we went down to Melbourne and then down to the Ottoways, where we got a cabin in the rainforest. You see a lot more wildlife that way (like wild koalas and kukaburras), and get to experience some of australias majestic natural beauty, like the 12 Apostles and Apollo bay.
Quantas is a fun airline to fly; we even had a really funny short film on the way down to Melbourne.
Have fun on your trip!

It all depends on how much time and money you have. Australia is about the size of the United States, so you will have to fly between the places you visit. Quantas sometimes has promotional fares where you can go 4 places with them for just a little more than their normal roundtrip fare. Use your frequent flier miles if you can...a friend and I went RT from MD to Cairns (Great Barrier Reef) for free on only 26,000 miles and only paid $95 in taxes
If you're a diver or snorkeler, the Great Barrier Reef is an absolute must. Amazing. September is a good month as there won't be any box jellies and it's slow time for tourists. There are many cheap places to stay in Cairns, which is the only place I've ever been to that has a huge free waterfront park with BBQ grills, picnic tables, and a great salt water pool that's open until 11P.M.
You've got to see Sydney....it's just wonderful. Stay as long as you can there. Besides the city, there are lots of side trips you can take
.
Melbourne is great too, but if time is an issue, plan to spend more time in Sydney.
Have fun planning your trip!

It depends on how much time you have and what your interest are. If you only have a short time you will need to fly between most places, as Australia is roughly the same size as continental US or Europe. You can get to most places within a 4 hour plane trip.
The Great Barrier Reef stretches for hundred of miles along the coast of Queensland. Cairns is a popular spot for people to go to see the reef. You can take boats to the reef to go snorkeling, diving etc. Cairns is around 3hrs by plane from Sydney. There are also other things you can easily get to from Cairns, like rainforests.
Melbourne is a great place for dining and nightlife (1 hr flight from Sydney). You may be able to take in an 'Aussie Rules' football game if you are early enough in Sept, but the season may be over when you get there. The Great Ocean Road is one of the world's most spectacular ocean drives .
The are great wine areas outside both Sydney (Hunter Valley) and Melbourne (Yarra Valley) as well as Adelaide (Barossa Valley). If you have time to get to the center (again, by air) Uluru (Ayer's Rock) is amazing. Tasmania is also beautiful.
If you have a limited time and can't travel to other places, there is a lot in Sydney itself. Yo can climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge for one of the best views of the city, take a ferry to Manly, walk around the 'Rocks' (where the city as first settled in the late 1700's)

The Great Barrier Reef is about 2000 miles away, if I'm not mistaken. The zoo is supposed to be fabulous, there's a great aquarium, and of course the Opera House, Manly Beach, the ferrys. Try the Lost Planet guidebook for lots of ideas - they're the best. Have fun!

Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Plus budget airlines are fairly cheap now, so you shouldn't have a problem if you wanted to fly out to the GBR...

go to glebe weekend flea market (if its still there) , you get some really cheap buys. other than the usual significant landmarks & recommendations you get from a travel guide book or website, i suggest visiting areas like Parramatta, Broadway for some unusual finds. taronga zoo is award-winning.. but its expensive to take photos with the animals!
