People are insecure and feel the need to belong to groups and subgroups to be validated. This causes competition, predjudice and closed-mindedness. I think it's based on fears and insecurities, the need to belong and have other people be accepting and agreeable with one's own differences. People are searching for an identity and will group and then feel superior to others.
