You can read the libretto for the Wagner opera at Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/16250).

The problem with reading the story itself is that the translations are relatively recent, and are therefore still in copyright. You'd have to find an older translation.

The LA public library has a video of a CBC broadcast of a 1976 performance in Montreal, Canada. I've watched it, and although I found the narration annoying, if you've never seen opera, you'd probably benefit from it.
