fake

This is a strange question. Because the stunts that they are doing are real, they do hurt, but they often do not do damage. The fights are pre planed, and I seem to recall hearing that the ref is in charge of "blocking" for lack of a better term.

Why do you think they ALWAYS use the same moves? It's not like the Ultimate fighters where anything goes. Also, take a look at collegiate Wrestling this too is more real and reactionary.

It's still a fun show whether it is "real" of "fake."

I enjoy organized violence. If you can catch the specials, many of the wrestlers confess it is a sport with specialized techniques to prevent as much full on injury as possible while giving the maximum in terms of visually stunning violent entertainment. I agree with Robthings and Mel (we must have watched the same specials). I've seen a few live shows and it's like goin' to a concert but with fighting. Music, lights, yelling, screaming, half naked men and women, and then a fight.
For awhile they even had on a reality wrestling show (Maven was the winner) and again they go thru the motions of showing how tough it is not getting injured flying five feet in the air and landing on someones back while swinging a chair. Pretty to watch when it's perfect, seriously cool when you see the guys leg get twisted and his shoulder snap back and his face hit the mat and the chair catch him in the wrong part of the back. I wouldn't survive that would you? Think of car racing. I can drive but if you set me on a track at 100 plus miles I'd be the one splattered against the wall but aren't those the moments us lay people watch for but drivers are trained to avoid and try to survive?
Real wrestling fans watch real wrestling (they don't need the costumes, back story or nicely executed moves), real Nascar fans watch racing (they don't go to see an accident).

It' s all fake, for entertainment purposes. Wrestlers are trained on how to make it look real. Although there have been some wrestlers that were killed because their stunts went wrong, for example Owen Hart. I used to go to live wrestling matches back in the day. I saw Ricky Steamboat, Kamala, Macho Man Randy Savage, and George the animal Steele.

FAKE FAKE FAKE..... well some of its real and sometimes they do get hurt but for the most part its all FAKE. They practice scenes and moves before the show. Wrestling is just a soap opera for men.

The outcomes are scripted. The reactions are acted (called "selling" a move.) The wrestlers are taught how to land and how to apply moves and holds to avoid injury. Matches may be very tightly coreographed or very loosely coreographed, depending on the wrestlers.

The athletics are real. The blood is real (even though some of the injuries are surrepticiously self-inflicted -- blading the forehead is pretty common.) Some of the injuries are real, some are part of the script.

When a wrestler who's supposed to lose a match strays from the script to win or when a wrestler applies a hold/move "for real" -- it's called "shooting."

Fans who believe it's real are called "Marks"

Fans who know it's scripted are called "Smarts"

Fans who know it's scripted but who like to "play along" with the idea that it's real are called "Smarks"

It's kind of like a testosterone charged soap opera written for men -- and the wrestlers are like actors who are also specialized stunt men and do all their own stunts.

Some of the moves in wrestling are real but certain moves do hurt these superstars a lot. They make up most of it and the people you see on the T.V. they are not going hitting people all over the place and things or they would be in jail right now.

Watching a documentry on the art, it was said by a wrestler owner who I cant remember because I dont watch it but he used to ref, got a call from Ted Turner. Ted told him "Guess what, I am in to "wrassling" (proper name for staged wrestling). And whathis name told him "Guess What, I am into Entertainment!" These answers are all good. Staged choreographed and practiced with sometimes unexpected outcomes. does that make me a smark?

I seen Razor Ramon and Shaun Michael's live...and I tell ya Razor is a big man when he walked through the door. I got his autograph too.
I also seen the headhunters.

It is a show and that is what makes money for the WWF. The better the show the better the hype and the better it is for the cash flow....no flow no cash that's how it works.

Think about it kid. No one but no one can bounce back from having the living tar beaten out of them to start coming back over and over again. How many times do you think some can have their head pounded into the ring ropes without ripping skin open.
Watch boxing or octagon fighting if you want to see real fighting. Those guys are at it for real. Those guys really bleed and go unconscious.
