That's usually due to a bad physical connection (to/from your computer or another phone in the house) or a phone off of the hook elsewhere in the house.

(1) busy or someone has left phone off the hook - if you have several phones in the house (we have 9), check to see if they are on the cradle - even if not used, sometimes someone knocks it off
(2) you didn't say if you are getting connected, even though you don't hear dial tone. If this is the case, maybe the 'sound' on your computer is 'off' or on'mute'
(3) if you have, like most phones have today, call waiting, caller ID, voicemail, etc.....disable those (if above 1 and 2 don'work)
(4) if all above does not work, check your internet connections in my computer and uninstall your internet provider and reinstall.
(5) check to see if settings are dialing are correct. See ifyou can add some more phone lines to connect to --- not sure where you live but at certain times of day, computers are the busiest and lines get overloaded. So see what other phone lines to connect to are avail from your ISP
(6) and the final step - if all above still a problem - call help desk - use your cellphone as they will need your landline to check the connection

sounds like you left a phone off the hook in your house or you have a modem problem
hang up all your phones
reboot your computer
try again
make sure the phone line at the computer works by unplugging the phone line to the computer and plugging a phone in right there
if the phone works but the modem still doesn't give a dial tone, then the odds are good that your modem is toast

Captain is right, if you're still able to access the internet, the volume is down or off on the modem - most desireable! Never could stand that sound back in the dial-up days.

You can connect to the internet, can't you? When you open the connection window that contains username & pws, goto "properties>configure> Here, check the "enable modem speaker" ". You can here it now.
