There are about 5000 stars visible to the naked eye from the surface of the earth.
It is estimated that there are 400 to 600 billion stars in our galaxy, the Milky Way. This changes constantly since there are still star forming regions in our galaxy.
There are estimated to be 1 trillion stars in the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest neighboring spiral galaxy.

A bagillion bagillion. I am sure that is not a real number, but it is probably not big enough to represent the number of stars. Yahoo! or Google search for Hubble Space Telescope's Deep Field or Deep Field II photos. In the Deep Field photo there are thousands of galaxies [not just individual stars] pictured. The photo was taken of a patch of sky that would be obscured by a dime if you held it at arm's length. It was also taken of what, even from earth orbit, appears as a dark or blank patch of sky. So, spread that representation out over the whole sky and there are lots and lots and lots of galaxies each with billions of stars.
Stars are formed from nebulae. The [usually] hydrogen gases in a nebula are eventually pulled together by gravity. This takes eons. When the hydrogen particles are close enough, and coalesce in sufficient amount, fusion begins and the star starts to shine. Our Sun turns approx 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium every second and will continue to do so by astronomers' estimates for a few billion years more.

It is impossible to know how many stars there are, because by the time the light they emit reaches us, many years have passed, so we will never really know how many stars there are, because we may see the light, but they could have already died. And, new stars are being formed constantly, but it will be years before the light reaches us, because some are trillions of light years away. Stars are basically just big balls of flaming gas. They are created by starting with a nebula. The nebula has within it a point of high density, which builds until it becomes a "protostar." Then, the gasses and debris from the nebula are pulled in by the gravity of the protostar, and it forms a "ball," which is a star.

There are billions of galaxies (our milky way is a galaxy), each with billions of stars, so there are at least 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars around us (all directions).
