I don't have anything else running while i'm trying to get google earth to work.

maybe you have too little RAM. or have too much programs running at once.
you might wanna try http://mapquest.com/ or yahoo maps.
theyre not really programs but.. they're ok.

Just don't use it. The last thing your PC needs is more crap running in the background to slow it down.
