I subscribe to Parelli club, also Horse and Rider. I like Western Horseman as well.
As for English publications, Horse play and Equus are very good-at least they were back when I rode English. But if I were you I would join Parelli, you will learn much more and be able to work together with your horse. Linda Parelli is great! She is also an English rider. She does a lot on Dressage and Jumping, but keeps it simple, while expanding your abilities.
The basics of English and western are the same, developing communication with your horse. The best place to learn this is in natural horsemanship clinics, books, and videos.
On a Parelli DVD they took a reining horse and a dressage horse, switched their gear and rider to see what horse was more versatile. The reiner did almost everything the dressage horse did, sometimes better! The dressage horse struggled with the maneuvers. They were both world class horses. Just my opinion, but I think cross training a horse for reining, will help in almost any discipline.

Horse Illustrated is an amazing magazine with lots of information on any type of riding. I'm an english rider as well and it is sometimes hard to find magazines at feed stores/local shops that will really give you tips on riding. When I was a little bit younger I read Young Rider. Those are two great magazines!

If you are looking for an english riding magazine then Practical Horseman is it. GREAT magazine. It has lots of articles on jumping, dressage, eventing, and flatwork for beginner through advanced riders. There is this one feature where famous trainer George Morrison evaluates 4 riders positions over fences each week...and its really helpful. I find Equus is a really good magazine as well, but its more about your horses health and such.

I subscribe to 'Horse Illustrated', 'Young Rider', 'Horse&Rider', 'The Foundation Quarter Horse', and a few others.
My favorite would be 'Horse&Rider' since it covers all sorts of topics from health to conformation to riding tips. Though it is mostly Western. If you want something more English, 'Horse Illustrated' has some nice articles and breed profiles.

I used to get Horse Illustrated and Wisconsin Horseman. I would think that Horse Illustrated would help with English riding.

frankly, I know you're talking English, but I find Horse & Rider way better than Horse Illustrated. It (H. Illustrated) rarely has really good articles. It has some good columns, but a lot of wandery articles, and something similiar is printed a year later. anyway, whatever you decide, try www.amazon.com , they have great magazine prices.
