230 years ago, 56 men committed an act of treason, and Americans are blessed because of it.
Yes, I know what today is about.
EDIT: (for OldGringo) You have a point. The Declaration was only signed by two people on the 4th, the president of the congress, John Hancock, and his secretary, Charles Thomson. The official signing began on August 2, with the last signature added by Thomas McKean of Delaware in 1781.
The initial attitude was that July 2 would be the day of celebration, because that's when the congress adopted the the Declaration. Further, the Declaration was not announced to the public until July 8.
I guess we just latched on to the 4th because that was the day the first signature was attached to it.

Yes, but the Declaration of Independence was not signed on July 4, 1776.

The Fourth of July signifies the day in 1776 that we claimed our independence from Britain and democracy was born.
I think about it, yes.

I think a lot of people do. The day is actually about a bunch of people who had the kahunas to stand up and say, "Hey, we left this place in England because it was bogus, and if we don't come up with some cool rules ourself, we'll be bogus, too!"

Yes...I do, but I know people who don't give a rat's sass about the true meaning. To them it's a paid day off to get drunk, eat a lot, go to the lake, and shoot fireworks in the street.
(I vote for SCOTT's answer...lol...!!!)
