HF or Hydrogen Flouride or Hydrofluouric acid (not HCL) is the only solvent I am aware of that will etch glass. It is also highly dangerous if it comes into contact with the body.

Important Safety Information: http://www.ilo.org/public/english/protection/safework/cis/products/icsc/dtasht/_icsc02/icsc0283.htm

Armour etch is one product I can think of. http://www.etchworld.com/cat--Armour+Etch--Armour+Etch
I think the active ingredient in Amour Etch is ammonium bi fluouride NH4 HF2

As the other person stated, diamonds are often used in etching, as well.

You can use an aqueous solution of sodium silicate (Na4SiO4) to engrave glass :-)

It is a very caustic product, fairly easy to find in store, and not as harmful as HF.

A couple things react with glass. Most acids wont.

But hydrofluoric acid will frost it. And alkali metal hydroxides will tear at it. HF is what people commonly use.

Glass can be etched with acid. Or carved with diamond.
