What provoked the girl into hitting the guy in the first place? If the guy was being a jerk then he has no right to physically hit her back, he has already hit her emotionally. She is just trying to defend herself physically.
However, if the girl just spontaneously starts hitting the guy for no apparent reason, then it depends on the character of the guy. Do you believe it is ever okay to swing at a girl? For me it would be no, but it all depends on who it is.
The best thing to do would just be to stop her (for the guy should be stronger than the girl) and ask her what is going on (that is if the punching just occurred randomly.) If she persists in her frenzy of madness, then maybe it is time to find her some help or move on to a new girl.
I would never hit a girl in retaliation, frustration, or anger and neither should any other guy, but it is all up to them to decide.

The only correct answer so far are the ones advocating that you leave the girl, or call the cops on her.
The ones that say don't hit her.... THEY ARE TOTALLY WRONG.
Here's why.
There are two factors.
Factor 1: Adulthood
Adult men should not hit women if it can be helped. We should be able to subdue them long enough not to cause harm.
How hard is she hitting? If it meant to be an Exclamation Point to something she is trying to get across, tell her you don't like being the POINT.
If she is just abusive, then she is just the same as men that hit women. They have a mental and social problem that stemmed from home upbringing.
Otherwise, self-defense is self-defense. Just make sure you are not trying to hurt her back, just use enough force to get her to stop.
Factor 2: Childhood.
What age group do you belong?
Teen males may need to fight back. Remember, women of this age believe women are equal to men. This includes fighting.
In grade school, you may need to fight that girl physically. Otherwise, you will be called names by both boys and girls.
When I was a kid, I was told never to hit a girl. Because of this, I was beat up by a girl in my class. What made it worse, my sister decided to defend me by fighting the girl for me.
Not only did this cause for name calling, teasing and other psychological hurtful phrases, it took me years to recover self-esteem.
I had to learn the hard way. When you are under 13, you may have to hit girls back if they really want to fight. Young girls and boys are about the same strength and toughness at these younger ages. Girls of this age can physically harm boys more than boys can physically harm girls in a normal fist fight.
And, young girls tend to fight dirty.

by law you have to allow three punches before it considered self defense. Then its a moral choice after that. I mean No matter if its legally self defense you still have to live with the desicion to hit the girl. Afterwards you cant take it back. The fact will remaint hat you punched a girl. People aren't gonna care she hit you. The story will go you hit a girl the she hit you part will prolly be left out.

Why are hanging out with someone who hits you? Just go away.
It seems like you are looking for an excuse to hit her back. I don't think a guy should ever hit a girl. If morals aren't enough to stop you, think about the legal ramifications. Either walk away and forget about it, or walk away and call the police.

First, it's not right for anyone to hit anyone else. BUT, if a woman does hit him, he should never hit her back. If he's smart he'll just break up with the crazy b*tch and never look back!
