Yes, and it is at the expense of the clubs. Unfortunately, it is a business, and these prima donnas have more power than the FA. and individual clubs. Many clubs have been formed into PLC's. So, the more successful a club is financially, the better the quality of players it can afford, which leads to greater footballing success, and so on. Eventually, however, too much success is a bad thing, because people get tired of the same teams winning all the time. Rugby league had this problem a few years ago with Wigan, so they had to brake the team up.
Public limited companies are not the appropriate vehicle for football clubs, because, unlike normal businesses, you can't drive the competition to the wall. They must be able to compete.
I have tried to answer your headline question, but I must admit, that you have lost me with the subtext beneath your question:
Television is simply responding to public demand and competitive market forces. The connection you have made with the plight of Africans is extremely tenuous. What about overpaid popstars and television and movie stars? one could go on and on. With respect, I think that you have tried to make a connection between two quite seperate things.

Over paid is an understatement. If you have watched any of the world cup matches. you would wonder why they get paid anything. The money that's forked out to those football players all in. Would keep a small country going for years. And what do the public see when these overpaid, so called, world class football players. play for their respective countries. Crap. they cant pass, they cant tackle, they cant even score a goal most of the time. But there is one binding fact about them all and that is they have all taken lessons in acting. Especially the Delicate art of Falling over, if another player comes to near them. Overpaid certainly, not as actors. But as football players YES.

They typically have very short careers, have to go through more intense training that alot of currently employed members of the armed forces, however in much nicer conditions. That being said, they are grossly overpaid, whats worse is they rarely do anything nice with their money, take a look at some of their salaries and you'll throw up on your keyboard, they pay for my mortgage in a month...it will take me 15 years to pay that off at my current mid range salary. Football clubs in general need the allure of masses of cash to get in new stars, it all depends on what motivates these people, their greed and thugish behaviour suggests its now just about money. Without the new stars however the industry would dry up and no one would want to watch it - losing companies, pubs, cities alot of income.

Yes all premiership and most other footballers are overpaid, if footballers gave half their weekly wages to charity such as the Sudan crisis of last year, then the amount would be astronomically high. When I say most other footballers I mean those who are not in any other employment to make ends meet, such as postmen, plumbers etc.

They are OVERPAID. OVER SEXED and OVER HERE.
Their salary should be based on the Minimum Weekly Wage, for actual hours worked. There would be a small bonus based on performance. i.e. £5 for each player when they win a game. NOTHING for a Draw.
We would then see REAL football being played by REAL men. No longer would we see a bunch of WINKERS.

I think they are well over paid. Years ago footballers were not paid that much and I think they performed a lot better than todays load of wimps. A slight knock and they are dying. Bring on the old fashion game

Yes some players are overpaid and also the money ruins them, you see Ronaldo from Brazil, darting stars models, in a world of fantasy because of his money, same as other humble players, and now with money they think they are different and thats ruim them sometimes because they can not deal with that kind of life

footballers are way overpaid and should have a salary cap at every club to avoid players asking for stupid amounts of money, or at least be forced by the club to give donations to different Charity's every month
