He was the pioneer of rap music. He catapulted rap into mainstream America and made it a huge empire. The new genre of music he produced gave us another option of music to explore.
Had it not been for him, there would be no Run DMC, Beastie Boys or L.L, Cool J. He has given hope to suburban artists who other wise would have never existed. A great entrepreneur of our time and a great story of determination and hard work, eventually paying off.

Well by producing obviously. Producers choose which groups/individuals to sign up, so those groups depending on whether they are successful or not, change the rap scene at the time of their popularity and influence the people listening to them. It can either be a negative or positive change as they could be negative or positive rappers. Eg either meaningful rap to stimulate and inspire or "gangsta" rap filled with violence, drugs, smackin hoes and all that negative stuff. That said,if Russel Simmons wasnt a part of the industry then then we wouldnt have all dem really tight Phat Farm clothes to wear, I our kids wouldnt have cool Baby Phat threads either!

Unless he was of the cailber of a Phil Spector or a Sam Phillips, he's just another player in the game, clothing line or not.

Even Suge Knight had an effect (negatively, as it turned out).

russell simmons career is one with the progression of urban culture and may i dare say it " black music" on a grandiose scale. russell had one of the most prolific careers that transended its "ghetto" roots to the far reaches of the planet. without his vision there is no def jam which means there is no jay-z, redman, epmd, k-solo, das efx, dmx, jah-rule, onyx, run-dmc, ll cool j, kurtis blow, foxy brown, do you guys understand that without these rappers there wouldn't be any hip hop

well I dont think his clothing line influenced much,
BUT if you go back to his roots,
he made steps to cross over rap and hip hop to a wider audience.
also probably why rap and hip hop has stunk since about 1996.
