The doctors call it a UCL — ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction.

Baseball players and fans call it Tommy John surgery, after the pitcher who was the first to have the surgery 29 years ago. By any designation, it is one of the major advancements in sports medicine in the last quarter century.

The surgical procedure hasn't changed much since it was pioneered by Frank Jobe for John in 1974. A tendon is removed from the patient's wrist or hamstring and grafted into the elbow — woven in a figure-eight pattern through tunnels drilled in the humerus and ulna bones.

Tommy John who was with the Dodgers at the time. He had a long and successful career after the surgery and thus it's named after him. Many players have had the surgery and come back to be good or better. A couple of current pitchers come to mind in the names Chris Carpenter and John Smoltz.

Tommy John! I once had his autograph on my baseball glove when I was in little league. Of course, using that glove over the course of season did wear it off. His wife is the sister to a former theacher in my area. So, that is how I got his autograph. They were visiting for a couple of days that summer and I got to meet him. Unfortuanately, I do not remember too much about it but I can remember I felt excited about it. His nephew graduated a couple of years behind me and his niece graduated with my youngest brother so I know the family.
