I have asked them what they thought would work but they don't have any idea...Please let me know how much we need to start what ever bussiness you propose if you know (in dollars please).

Start with a small bakery there and then build up your business gradually.

There are a lot of business opportunities in Africa as a whole, most of them with possibilities of higher returns, of course with higher risks too.
However to answer your question , you need to give more specific information, such as which specific country, which city, How much investment money do you call small (range needed).
This information will give more insight to the demographics, the needs , economic situation, government policies and a whole lot more than will help give a realistic answer to your question.

Anything works in Africa - as long as you can provide it.
Starting from Grain, Automobiles - NEW or refurbished, Utilities, Water Pumps, Garments, etc etc.
These businesses are already there, but if you can sell at a lower price then the local competition - you have it made.

An excellent resource to tap into would be the Christian missionaries that are stationed there. Honestly, they are in the mix of the population; and would have a firsthand synopsis of what the economy craves.
