The freedoms we are allowed. The fact we can disagree with our government and not be persecuted. America has its faults, all bright and shiny for the world to see, but we stand behind our friends. And we will even help out our less than friends in a pinch.
The war we are in shows the dark side, the arrogant actions of this country's leaders. But is doesn't show how we, the people, really think. How horrified many of us are at the hidden agenda behind this war and that our young people are being killed for the self serving reasons of a few. Not to mention the deaths of the innocents on the other side.
This country is a country of a predominate immigrant base. American Indians are the only true natives. (and we all know they certainly got the short end of the stick) But Americans are a true representation of the good and the bad that the world has to offer.
But what make America great is that I can write this opinion because of the many who have fought to give me this right. Thanks to them and yes, I am still proud to be an American.

Nothing. I don't think being American is better than being anything else. Oh you must mean being White American. I have seen poverty and horrible conditions here just like third world countries. I experience injustices as a Black American and I am expected to fail. So nothing to me, makes it so wonderful.

Americans have a beautiful diverse country to live in. It is a free country which allows any citizen to move freely within it's borders and maintain a nice life for themselves. America is among the richest countries in the world in both wealth and resources. We have a mighty military power which protects our people and our freedom which we enjoy so much. As for me, I am an American and proudly honor our fallen men and women who have fought for our freedom. I get chills every single time I hear our national anthem being played no matter how many times I hear it. I proudly put my hand across my chest and utter "under God" during my pledge of Allegiance. We are "One nation, under God" We are Indivisible with Liberty and Justice for all.

Being free to go where you want and practice whatever religion you wish and go as far as you want in life. And see, the USA is great because we can choose to be bitter like some of the above people, and say it without the fear of getting their heads chopped off.
And John, the question did not imply that other places are not also great.
And Courtney, because you live in the US you can go to college and become whatever you want, even the Secretary of State like Condi Rice. Or a doctor or teacher or whatever you want. And then after you become successful, you can go back to all the people who told you would never make it, and flip them off!! Or whatever it is you think is right.
Happy 4th of July all.

Bill of rights and all that they entail
and my ability to disagree with jessi...that the gov't doesn't control us. It may seem that way, but until compared with gov't in other countries that truly do control their citizens, ours lets us run wild
and...my ability to disagree with bibika, that unfortunately, because the name of the US is United States of America, that we are called Americans, and it is not meant to be a disrespect towards others who live on the North and South American continents. We are not called United Statians, we are called Americans and it should not be a point of discontent
and...my ability to call my current adminstation fascist, to say I think my president is not a good president and it is his actions, like starting an unjustified war, that make me believe this.

Freedom. But other places are cool too!!!
Everywhere has positives and negatives and America is included in that but the freedoms we enjoy tend to be much greater than in most of the rest of the world.

Well to begin with, I'm a Lion's fan (I know it's hard to believe anyone would subject themself to the pain) and I can tell you I've been hoping Farve would retire or go somewhere else for over a decade; I can "hate" that guy and you can "love" him and neither one of us are wrong and neither one of us are "offended" because we accept one anothers opinions here in the US. But now, let me seriously answer your question as to what makes being an American so wonderful. To begin with, I can hear from religious leaders of various faiths from Christianity to Buddhist to Islamic to whatever else and decide for myself as to which faith speaks to me spiritually without fear of persecution/retribution from those claiming to "speak" for the only "true" religion. Next and unlike so many others around the globe, I can participate in my government. I get to help decide who represents me in the government and ,if I feel they are not speaking on my behalf, I can simply vote them out at the next election; I don't need to revolt, rebel, etc. Heck, I could even become one of the people to represent the rest of my countrymen if I choose to- anyone can pretty much do it. Next, I get to hear opinions from people with huge political, social, economic, etc differences on issue ; I can get one slant or view reading the NY Times and then I can get a different perspective on the same issue watching Fox news- in the US political differences are respected (well they used to be). I have no fear of simply being picked up by my governments leaders and being locked away (or worse) because I disagree with them and represent a threat to their hold on authority. If I'm accused of a crime to society or if I feel wronged by anyone in society- even the socially, politically, economically powerful- I have the opportunity to be fairly heard through our legal process. I can learn from and create friendships with people representing the largest variety of diversity anywhere in the world. I know as an American that, regardless of my background, I have a greater opportunity, through hard work/talent/free basic and affordable higher education for economic prosperity than anywhere else in the world- why else do so many people continually seek to come here legally or not?I even get to choose my job/career. I also know, that even if I fail miserably, my government does so much more to help me and take care of me than just about anywhere. The one thing that, in addition to all the liberty and opportunity being an American provides me,makes me proudest is knowing that we Americans were the inspiration for those in other nations that now share similar rights and opportunities to ours and we have always and will continue to fight for the freedom of others across the world. Happy Birthday USA (I also got a couple well wishes from Canada, Australia, etc.)- you got me in a very patriotic mood today.
