Because Portugal's goalie was amazing and Rooney got a red card.

England lost their quarter-final match with Portugal because England's coach was too negative and had started the game with a 4-5-1 formation and i believe they should of started with a 4-4-2 formation and put Crouch up front with Rooney cause this would of prevented Rooney getting a red card. Being a lone striker is very tiring and that's why Rooney was Frustrated and made a School-Boy mistake. I also believe Steven Gerrard should of Captained England. Beckham is not a Captain's ***!
If England had been allowed to play positively they would have won easily.

Over confidence during the playing time. Roony is a prey to the trap made by Portugal players. They are professionals in all the fields as other Eu teams. We cannot blame Portugal players for what happened with Rooney ... its totally his mistake. And while shoot out, no player from England having confidence. Ricardo said it was written on face of each England players that " I am going to miss the shoot or I will shoot to the hands of Ricardo". Shame on these players.

I think England lost the match because, Wayne Rooney was sent off, and changing in place of David Beckham. I agree that Beckham is not at the best form of his life, but still in Penalty shoot-out they (England) could´ve hoped that atleast Beckham is also there (Penalty-kick specialist). And see what happened England could score just one Goal on Penalty (and that also touched the hand of G-K. And they missed 3 kicks. So there´s the difference.

Thanks!

Because Portugal played a better game than England, have better players, & England sucked at penalty kicks.

The whole point of the game is to get goals, including the penalties. The simple reason is that the other team got more than the English............. The whole competition was a load of old toffee and the most unsporting I have ever seen...........

Scoreboard. When you get a bunch of players who spend more time posing for magazine covers than practicing you end up crying on the bench at the end of the match.
