Because it's a real pain in the rear when a student breaks a microscope because he or she does not know how to use it properly, instructions are given for a reason. Microscopes are expensive and delicate pieces of equipment, but if you learn to use one properly, you're going to see some really cool stuff with it.

If you are being asked to do this in school, you do it to learn and to pass the test.
If you are ever going to use a microscope, or talk to anyone who uses a microscope, it is so that you can understand why and how you are seeing what you are seeing. It also allows you to avoid saying things like "No, no! I meant you should put that thingy on the whatchamacallit, then turn that black thingy!" In other words, it allows clear communication and mutual understanding with a minimum of unnecessary explanation.
It's also very cool to know more stuff. Like Tim Allen's "More Power!"

I think you should worry about mastering the mastering the English language first. Once you have that down, then worry about the microscope.
