how can I tell if my central air/heat is a single or 2 stage unit?

Look at the breaker. A two phase unit will have a double breaker on the circut as opposed to say the bathroom lights or something, wich will be single.

if it is a 2 stage yhe fan would have 2 speeds... a single unit has 1
