Personally, I never used McAfee firewall. However, PC Magazine had reviewed the firewall along with many other popular firewalls. Here are some highlights of their reviews. (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1665091,00.asp)

"McAfee Personal Firewall Plus 6.0 is easy to set up and quickly learns what programs are allowed Internet access. It tested well against external intrusion and against direct attacks on the firewall process. But if a brand-new worm or Trojan using any of the well-known leak test techniques attacks on your system, it won't protect you." -- pcmag.com

PC Mag rated McAfee firewall as Good (3 out of 5 stars). Let me help with the terminology. Worms and Trojans are malicious files different from viruses. A worm infects a PC and then makes several copies of itself and uses your PC as a launching pad to infect other PC's (e.g. the worm scans your e-mail address book and sends copies of itself to those addresses). Trojans (i.e. the Trojan horse) are programs that disguises themselves to appear as safe files. The disguise serves to lure you to download them to your PC. Once installed, they record keystrokes, harvest all your passwords to websites,...basically really bad stuff. PC Magazine reports that McAfee is good at detecting old forms of worms and Trojan horses but is ill equip for new ones.

PC Magazine also mentions leak tests. Hackers, in their effort to circumvent your PC's security, have developed ways to trick your computer in to disabling your firewall. Without a firewal, there is nothing between your PC and the Internet. Leak tests are tests to determine how well firewalls can defend against such attacks. McAfee doesn't do too well in this category. But, in its defense, many free as well as commercial firewalls don't fare too well in this category either. Please read the entire review.

Oh, you asked about AVG. AVG Grisoft is a computer security vendor. Its products include antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware software. AVG Grisoft provides a free versions of their antivirus and anti-spyware software for personal and non-commercial use.(http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1). PC World has an excellent article on three free antivirus programs, including AVG.

I don't think McAfee Firewall is that reliable, I am using Zone Alarm Firewall and it's great, it provides great protection and it's way better than any other firewalls out there, so use it!

Speaking of this AVG, it's an AntiVirus software, from Grisoft, a FREEWARE and is one of the best among the 3 great FREE AntiVirus software, the 3 are Avast, AVG and AntiVir.
