there are a number of standard ways ( an increasing number) in which an outsider can break something in your machine and either steal information of make your machine go wrong. Firewalls are aware of these attacks and stop these messages from the internet from entering your machine.

A firewall monitors a computer's connection to the Internet. Ideally, a firewall should monitor both outgoing and incoming Internet traffic. Once your computer accesses the Internet, there is a physical connection between your PC and the Internet. Unfortunately, there is a lot of malicious content on the Internet which trys to use the connection to make its way in to your PC.
