I'm not a doctor but I can help from experience. If you haven't opened your bowels for several days there will be a 'plug' of material in your colon. Taking laxatives won't shift this. All that may happen is you might get a trickle of diahorrea past the plug.
I suggest you go to your pharmacy and get glycerine suppositories and insert a couple. These are completely harmless and will just lubricate your rectum, hopefully allowing you to get things moving. If this doesn't work, you will need to contact your doctor who will prescribe an enema. This is also harmless but should really be performed by a qualified person.

Why are you this constipated? You should drink your 8 glasses of water daily and eat fruit. Try prunes and mangos. You could drink the laxative Citrasin, but only once to get rid of all the crap you have accumulated. This is used when doctors are going to do a study and they need you to have your colon empty. Don't take laxatives regularly that will mess up your bowels and then you will always be constipated. Work on your diet.

My initial response is to look at your eating habits.
A number of things can contribute to constipation, including poor fluid intake, not enough fibre, lack of exercise, lazy toilet habits (putting off going to the toilet when busy), pregnancy, an underactive thyroid gland and depression. Side effects of some drugs or supplements, bowel obstruction and abnormal masses (e.g. large fibroid or an ovarian cyst) can also be a cause. It is therefore important to see your doctor if you experience a change in bowel habit like this.
If all else seems fine, your doctor may diagnose irritable bowel syndrome, but this is not a diagnosis you should make yourself. To help overcome mild constipation, change your diet to include more fibre from wholegrains, salads, fresh fruit and vegetables - snack on apples, bananas, pears, grapes, dried apricots or figs when hungry, rather than crisps, cakes or biscuits. Soak five to six prunes in water or cold tea overnight and eat them for breakfast with natural bio yoghurt. Add seeds (e.g. sunflower, pumpkin, fenugreek, fennel and linseed) to salads and yoghurt for extra roughage. Natural bulking agents such as bran or wheat husks, taken with plenty of water, can be bought to soften stools and increase the volume of bowel motions. Molasses are also an effective and harmless laxative - take one to two teaspoons daily. When taking fibre supplements, it is vital to drink plenty of fluid: at least six glasses of mineral water per day to swell up the dietary fibre and get things moving. You should also try to take more exercise such as walking, swimming or cycling.
Good luck

Over the counter meds usually sort it out, but it can get the point where you need something stronger. There are loads of things a doctor can offer, so a quick visit will sort it out. Do go, if you leave it too long it can cause damage.
If you are prone to this, take care to avoid it in future, so eat plenty of fibre and fruit etc regularly. Your doc will be able to advise on this aswell. Its difficult to know how much is enough, but you can try different things to see what effect they have (prunes, all-bran cereal etc) so if you feel another bout coming on, you can eat some to stop it developing.

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse, please contact me for some help. i have patients with this problem and have had some very good results. Don't panic, a week, although not normal, isn't to bad. You must drink at least 2 litres of water a day. DON'T take laxatives they are very bad for you and only make the problem worse. You may have to go to the doctor, who will remove it by hand, If you mean you can pass anything because of the pain apply Vaseline to the anal area. If you e mail me please give me your full e mail address for a reply

I talk about anything, I wouldn't take anymore laxatives as they will draw on the water in your body, keep drinking plenty of water and try some prune juice, eventually you will go, and if your that bunged up the laxatives will take up to 24 hrs, see your GP if nothing happens, you may need a check over

I was in hospital last year and was pretty much bedridden, I ended up like you and one of the nurses found me in so much pain I was crying!
She told me to drink milk, so I did lots of it and then I ate as much fruit as I could stomach. I took laxatives too and it eased in the end. If you have been active and well then I would see your doctor about it.
It is very nasty when you get it like that and I hope you feel a bit better soon.

Go to your local paramacy or Wal-Mart and purchase Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution 10 oz. bottle drink the whole bottle w/1-2 glasses of water and you will go in just 30 min. to several hrs. it works wonders I get constipated often and that is what my local emergency room had me drink when I went in there one time. Hell I was contstipated and didn't even now it. Just make sure you are close to a toilet for the next couple days.

Are you drinking plenty of fluids? Water is best but (and I'm not joking now...) a couple of pints of Magners does it for me everytime.
You could also try getting a stomach massage specifically for the purpose of moving any matter in the bowel along, can be a little painful if you are very bloated but does help too.
