The automobile powered by the Otto gasoline engine was invented in Germany by Karl Benz in 1885. Benz was granted a patent dated 29 January 1886 in Mannheim for that automobile. Even though Benz is credited with the invention of the modern automobile, several other German engineers worked on building automobiles at the same time. In 1886, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Stuttgart patented the first motor bike, built and tested in 1885, and in 1886 they built a converted horse-drawn stagecoach. In 1870, German-Austrian inventor Siegfried Marcus assembled a motorized handcart, though Marcus's vehicle didn't go beyond the experimental stage.

Actually Mercedes-Benz didn't form till 1926. Benz however was around long before that. I tend to think that most people believe that Benz invented the first car, but they forget about Gottlieb Daimler. I accept, and is much accepted in the professional world that when the 'Fardier', Cugnot's 1770 model debut was the first. I guess it can be argued that the Egyptians have record of a self propelled vehicle in their hieroglyphs. But it is still under debate. The best accepted answer would be France, Cugnot. I do not want credit for this answer, I am just agreeing with some of the other answers.

It is important to remember that Henry Ford did not invent the combustion engine or the powered automobile (or any of the hulkingly usely steam-powered cars that predated it). Ford invented a system of automobile manufacture that was so quick, cheap and efficient that it is still in use today.

The very first self-powered road vehicles were powered by steam engines and by that definition Nicolas Joseph Cugnot of France built the first automobile in 1769 - recognized by the British Royal Automobile Club and the Automobile Club de France as being the first.
