In your own neighborhood. Organize or get involved in a neighborhood crime watch. Sweep and clean up the sidewalks and streets. Help out your elderly and/or disabled neighbors with housework and/or yard-work.

Almost every city has a program or 2 to help children and adults break the cycle of welfare. They always need volunteers to help with after school care, or with adult education and career counseling.

Also, volunteering at a local hospital is a great way to give back and help those in need.

Habitat for Humanity is in almost any state and it is a great organization -- in addition to helping build homes you can also volunteer on a committe liek public relations or family services

Also, being a mentor is a great experience and there are youg kids that need good role models in just about every state too

You can apply to volunteer in public schools - they usually appreciate people who put in volunteer time!
