Mindmapping is a wonderful tool. Try putting the phrase "mindmapping" in your search engine like google.

You could study the discipline of project management which is a lot of fun. You can check that out on pmi.org.

You could use de Bono's PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting) tool were you list all the positive things about a given solution and then negative and then list those things that are just plain interesting.

Some folks make decision using a table format and giving things number ratings (say 1 thru 5) on characteristics and then giving those characteristics priorities or weightings.
