It really doesnt hurt to pierce it. you will feel a lil bit of pressure, but it goes through so quickly its over before it hurts. Now as far as healing... That can differ from person to person. I have pierced mine 2 times. The first time it was sore, and I got pretty frustrated that I couldnt eat as fast as I could with out it. I got used to it, and now ive had it 10 years. It all depends on how bad you want it. You can im me if you have any more questions. Those previous posts.. are BS. you can eat anything that you can tolerate.. I ate burger king.. Listerine will be you new best friend. If you suck on ice, or popcicles, the swelling will subside faster. Its not that bad, and its not a diet either. You arent going to lose weight having a tongue ring.* Its not like its stuck in your mouth, you can take it out for surgeries... DUH*

Aside from the swelling which upon the size, be prepared to lose a few taste buds...primarily it will take about a week and a half for it ti adjust. PLEASE go easy on yourself...use ice, or perhaps sorbet.....like an Italian ice and though it may be difficult, TRY to not feel it inside your mouth for you can widen the hole. You do NOT want to do that. For that will take more time to heal. stick with the tried and true cooler things and there is no reason at all to not enjoy the cooler and tastier drinks aka smoothies and such......keep it clean, gargle 4 times a day. I hope that you enjoy your piercing .... see the size of the gage should have some bearing upon it. Stay with ice like thing s as much as you can...it will keep the swelling way down...and then yo will be able to pursue having it and it , although it will feel strange at first, you will enjoy it immensely.

First of all, always go somewhere that has a good reputation and make sure you watch them open a brand new needle to assure that they aren't reusing needles.

They will fit you with a barbel that appears way too long when you first get it pierced. they do this b/c your tongue will swell up and it needs room to swell. the piercing itself is a piece of cake. it goes so fast that you'll be surprised that it's over already.

it really depends on the piercer you go to, but most have you swish with sea salt to heal it up and keep it clean. a lot of them tell you not to use Listerine, but I got this weird white ring around the hole on the bottom of my tongue and I swished with Listerine for a few days after I got that and it went right away. so really it's just personal preference.

if the pain is bothering you at all when you get home, you can take a couple of Ibuprofen for the swelling. the tongue is a muscle, so IBs are the best thing for the swelling and pain combo. you can also crush some ice and let the chips dissolve in your mouth. try not to get too big of a piece in your mouth.

I think they also told me not to drink through a straw afterwards, but I don't remember for sure. try to avoid sticking your tongue out for everyone to see your new piercing for about a week. it's cleaner inside your mouth than it is outside of it. you don't really want to knock around the piercing too much either.

after about 7-10 days, you can go get fitted for a shorter barbel. I ended up going back twice to get refitted b/c my tongue was apparently still a bit swollen after 10 days. I would suggest acrylic balls over metal b/c they're better for your teeth.

In addition to the swelling and pain, you also run the risk of damaging the tooth enamal and some folks have that speech problem with a tongue piercing. (I guess you need to learn to reform some words again)

Tongue piercing is stupid and dangerous. It can cause serious problems, some of which cannot be easily fixed.

Infection
Chipped teeth
Periodontal disease
Aspiration of jewelry

If you show up in my OR needing surgery, ANY jewelry in your tongue/lip will come out, as the risks during anesthesia are high.

expect pain, swelling, infection and most of all bad breath!!!! and after about 3 months when it is healed(maybe) then you get to show it off alittle, and after a year you don't give a damn anymore and you want to take it off forever.
