In portuguese we can say "have mercy on me" meaning pity.
In english seems to have the same meaning of pity.
In french means Thank you.

"Merci" in French usually means "Thank you"; however if someone gives you something and you say "Merci" before you have taken it from them, it means "No, thank you".

French for "thank you." You may also hear "merci beau-coup" (boo-coo). That means thanks a lot.
