I am planning a trip to Peru, Lima area for next September. I have never been out of the country and will be traveling with my husband and another couple. None of us know anyone who has been there and just want to make sure it will be safe. Are people safe there, is the food safe to eat everywhere, can we drink the water there? This is just a few of my questions, but if you can give me any other info about even where to visit when we are there I will be very greatful for any other info I can get. THANKS

I've been to Lima several times over the past 5 years. have not had a problem with the locals, But in current state of world affairs I wouldn't take too many chances. Water is dicey at best, use bottled as much as humanly possible, even for brushing teeth ,and the food needs to be well cleaned and cooked before eating.

Your trip should be safe. Check out the web site I have listed it will give you a summary of things from safety and security to road conditions and type of government. Local tap water in Peru is not considered potable. Only bottled water or treated (disinfected) water should be used for drinking. Fruits and vegetables should be washed with care, and meats and fish should be thoroughly cooked. Eggs, meat, unpasteurized cheese, and seafood are common sources of the bacteria that can cause travelers' diarrhea, and they should be properly prepared or avoided.

There is more crime there than in U.S. and Canada such as "Express kidnappings," in which criminals kidnap victims and seek to obtain funds from their bank accounts via automatic teller machines. Make sure not to travel alone especially at night. Visitors should avoid carrying unnecessary credit cards or ATM cards, and keep cash and ID in their front pockets.

I am going to Brazil in August through my school and one group just got back from Peru and had a great time with no problems.
