Have you tried posting your resume on sites like Monster and Yahoo Jobs!. Get the newspaper and comb through the employment section. Check out all of the companies that you may be interested in and inquire about an IS position even if it is not listed. You can also go online to different companies web site and view the career opportunities. They sometimes give you contact information.

I guess I would try a more backdoor approach. I think it would be hard to give a on the spot answer. Unless they are HR and then they would have a "canned" answer. I think I would learn about the company through like the local business journal. I would go to seminars and have resumes ready. I think calling folks out of the blue would be rude because when I am at work I have so much to do. I am under a lot of pressure to perform. But when I am in educational training or seminars I am a lot more relaxed and approachable. Good luck. But all said, it does hurt to try a pursue your idea. Maybe try it a few times and change it as needed.

Research the companies where you think you'd like to work to identify if the company really IS the kind of place where you'd like to work. If you know someone who works at a particular company, try to find out what needs they might have that aren't currently filled.

Especially if you're coming in cold, you really need to market and sell yourself. Why should they hire you? What benefit will you bring to them? How will you help them Increase Profits? Save Money? Save time? Reduce Costs? You need to understand their business, and explain how your skills will help them fill a need.

If you can tell a company how much they would gain by hiring you, you'll have a much better chance. Your aggressive approach may even impress some of them (will probably turn off others).

Get your resume together and post it on Monster.com. While you're there, do a job search and send your resume to specific companies you have an interest in. You can follow-up by phone, but it may be difficult getting to the appropriate party.

HR departments are the main hiring area in big companies. The generalist may take calls, but without a resume, you will not get a foot in the door.
