It is an "ultra-technically" correct spelling of "fish", based on pronounciations of these letters in other english words.
"gh" is pronounced "f" in "rough"
"o" is pronounced as a short i in "women"
"ti" is pronounced "sh" in "motion
Oddly enough, even when "fish" is intended, when "ghoti" is pronounced, it is invariably pronounced "GO-tie" or "GO-tee", which kind of defeats the whole intent.

according to the web it's an imaginary word used to illustrate irregularities in english spelling! makes no sense to me how can there be an imaginary word and if it's only imaginary why is it listed?
