It is pure gold. Gold is a soft metal so jewelry normally comes in 10k, 14k, or 18k. Anything higher than this is too soft to be durable for jewelry purposes. 22k is used on china, for the rims, so it has to be hand washed since the dishwasher heats it up too hot. It makes the gold too soft and it will rub right off the plate.

24 karat gold is "pure" - has not been intentionally mixed with any other metal - and is therefore very soft and relatively easy to manipulate.
