I would hope that she had enough confidence in her ability to perform surgery that she would consult a textbook if needed.

Several times surgeons consult a pathologist while on surgery to decide the extent of resection needed.Pathologists take a section of the cut tissue and advise how extended the damage is.Surgeon extends or cuts short the procedure.This is like consulting a text book.

As a matter of second opinion, Yes. Better safe than sorry.
Even Airplane Pilots use the manual during flights. Formula 1 racers get info & tips from the pits. Astronauts get commands from space centre.Mechanics, software engineers,miners,all refer to instruction books now & then.
Its very helpful, with so many possibilites available every time they are in process of work on hand.

LOL, no but I saw a Dr with a sheet of instructions laying out while inserting an IUD.
