Autotrophs manufacture their own food. Heterotrophs do not manufacture their own food by photosynthesis. The lactose fermentors use a metabolic pathway that does not require oxygen (it is MUCH les efficient.) Actually, lactose fermentors MUST be heterotrophs (as far as I know), but not all heterotrophs use fermentation or use it exclusively. We use both glycolysis (in aerobic respiration in most cells) and lactose fermentation (in anaerobic fermentation in muscles). The lactose fermentation is only 1 possible pathway for fermentation, and it produces lactic acid.
