it's not everyday a guy asks this so i'm gonna take the opportunity to explain it from a 14 year old girl's point of view:
how it feels and the amount of blood differs for each girl. some women have a heavy flow, some have a regular flow, and some have a light flow. also, some women get BAD cramps and some have a slight ache. usually we get bloated and gain weight, but it goes away eventually. it's also pretty bloody and gross and it's definately a nuisance. we have to change pads, tampons, and go through all of that every month. what bugs us the most is the guys who aren't understanding and get on our cases, so mad props to you for being understanding and curious about the female cycle.

mensuration for me :
3 days before until the day of bleeding I will cry over spilt milk .. I hate it ,there is just no control of it , happens . also my face is braking out left and right .. this contributes to my *****y mood.
Then the day of , comes the bloating and I'm not fitting in my pants all that well and this makes me irritable and the fact that my thighs feel like big chunks of lead and most likely have a migraine /back pain at the end of every day.
I used to have such horrible cramps , so bad when it hit i just had to sit i could be in a store shopping and i would just sit it hurt so bad , but then i got the pill and that symptom is long gone .
best things to offer a girl on the rag : backrub , icecream ,chocolate , hot bath with bubbles while you do the dishes .. :0)

In many women, various unpleasant symptoms caused by the involved hormones and by cramping of the uterus can precede or accompany menstruation. More severe symptoms may include significant menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea), abdominal pain, migraine headaches, depression and irritability. Some women encounter premenstrual stress syndrome (PMS or premenstrual syndrome), severe cases of which are clinically referred to as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Other women are said to suffer from what some doctors call post-menstrual syndrome where similar symptoms manifest themselves. This is rare and is usually not as severe or as long as pre-menstrual syndrome. Breast discomfort caused by premenstrual water retention is very common. The list of symptoms experienced varies from person to person. Furthermore, within an individual, the severity of the symptoms may vary from cycle to cycle. Pharmaceutical and herbal companies provide products designed to lessen or relieve some or all of these symptoms.

i'll answer you in my own experiences:
emotionally, i'm either really in a bad mood or in a very good mood. it totally depends... one minute i will be all hype and laughing and then the next i'll be like sulking like hell. girls really got this mood swings because of the hormones that work in our body whenever we have our period.
physically... sometimes i feel cramps in the lower abdomen and in my back. i would also feel warm and sticky, and i always wanted to be very, very neat. i've got anemia so i would look even paler whenever i have my period (imagine that you already lack blood in your body and blood is being 'drained' out of you every month!)... and yea... some girls have their **** hurting--- honestly!
i could also be like a pig whenever i've got my period... i crave for sweets (mostly choclates), sour and salty foods (like green mangoes) and i drink a lot of water. either way, i would have no appetite at all and would just spend the day sleeping.
but even though i'm having this flow, i can still do the thigns i love doing as well as doing my daily routine (only that is if i got to mood to work out.) lol.

It varies from person to person. So we might give you 20 different answers and none of them may apply to you. The only thing will all have in common is that it is nasty. Feminine hygiene is a MUST!

personally, i would like to either crawl in a hole for an entire week every month, or i would just like to kill every person i come across. for me, it's very painfull and very draining, physically and emotionally. i just want to say that if you are a guy, i admire the fact that you want to learn what goes on and how we feel. hopefully these answers have given you an understanding that you can use to help your wife or girlfriend one day. just be nice and caring, she will need it!!!

physically or emotionally? well, menstruation itself kind of feels like a thick urination (that's only if your flow is heavy). but you can cramps in your stomach or back, and usually you crave sweets or salty foods--not mention getting kind of crabby. don't worry.
