Well, your ISP distributes IP addresses automatically using a DHCP server. Most routers don't have an option to set a static IP but since yours does then yes, you can set it, providing it is within the IP address range owned by your ISP and used on the subnet in your area... However... each IP address on a network has to be unique. If you set your IP address to an address already assigned to another user by DHCP then there will be 2 interfaces with the same address. This causes routing loops, and data will almost definitely be lost as a sequence of packets may be partially sent to two different hosts. The network will just get congested and slow with floods of routing incorrect routing updates consume all of the bandwidth. Routing and ARP tables will be wrong and both hosts will be unable to effectively use the internet. It's best to just leave it as dynamic.

Dynamic IP addresses are issued to identify non-permanent devices such as personal computers or clients. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use dynamic allocation to assign addresses from a small pool to a larger number of customers. This is used for dial-up access, WiFi and other temporary connections, allowing a portable computer user to automatically connect to a variety of services without needing to know the addressing details of each network.

Static IP addresses are used to identify semi-permanent devices with constant IP addresses. Servers typically use static IP addresses. The static address can be configured directly on the device or as part of a central DHCP configuration which associates the device's MAC address with a static address.

static ip address is which the address doesnt change.

dynamic ip address is oone which changes, given by isp.

but for one session the dynamic ip doesnt change, for the next session the ip will change.

for example. in a LAN the ip doesnt change, so that u can do some programs to connect that system. whenever u run the program that runs sucesfully.

but wen u r connecting yr computer to internet. at that time u hav a ip, after dissconnecting the connection, wen u reconnect the net, u will get a different ip. i wil make u safe from hackers,..

static IP address = an IP address you have for your internet connection that'll never change on its own (generally for dial-up internet)

dynamic IP address = an IP address that will change from time to time (DSL, Cable connections although cable won't change the IP address unless something weird happens and had to change but that doesn't happen often).

the static Ip address is for local network, for example between two computers or more, in this case you choose the address but we know that in network classes there is some addresses reserved, like: 192.168.x.y but the dynamic is used only if you have a DHCP server in your network, because DHCP server give each computer connected to it a specific Ip address, and for exampl, and this DHCP alow you to reserv some addresses for some machines, if there is an other DNS server connected to it, you musn't change its adresse so the DHCP keep this address for the DNS server, and same thing for getways and other servers. beside DHCP, your ip become automaticly dynamic when you connect to the internet, so the provider give your machine everytime a new IP addresse, and it's working like the DHCP,........ for whom don't know this, "IPCONFIG /release" command delete your current IP address if you're conected to DHCP and "IPCONFIG /renew" to get a new IP address.......... I'm sorry for my english, but all my knowladges are in french
