Suggestions:
Put a cold pack (one of those blue flat things that you can reuse to put cold on a sore muscle) in the freezer, then put it under your head at night - with a cloth between you and it. My husband does that one. He sometimes gets up in the night to get a replacement if it is really hot.
Get a thin nightshirt/night gown - with cotton as part of the content of the material. Wet it and wring it as dry as possible - but still damp.
Wear it. It will work like the wet flannel without the fear of suffocation.
Take a cool shower before bedtime, too. And drink plenty of water during the day, so you have water to perspire with. That naturally helps cool you down.
Hope these help. It is really hot this summer.

well the first thing is have a shower then open the windows, throw all quilts to the side, and put a fan on that is blowing directly at you for atleast half an hour prior to going to sleep and lie down with ur eyes closed, but the most important thing is that u keep still and not move around too much, the more you move the more body heat you are producing, then turn the fan off as you begin to feel sleepy and you'l feel abit chilled and before you know after a hard days work and feeling shattered you'll be out like a light, nite nite! x

I lived in Ohio during the summer for a year and the only way I could get cool was to turn the heater off for my water bed and sleep on a think sheet. I also had a fan blowing the cool air from the window onto me.
If you don't have a water bed, is there another bedroom in another part of the house that you could sleep in that does not get as much sun during the day and has a better breeze pattern?
If you can't afford air conditioning, then there are portable units called "swamp coolers" or "evaporative cooler" that you pour water into and it is blown out as cold air. You can get one for as low as 100 dollars. Here is a website with some examples: http://www.air-n-water.com/swamp-coolers-evaporative.htm
I loved mine. Of course, you have to keep a gallon jug around to fill it will water occasionally, but that is no big deal.

Its safe to put fan on and dont believe in people who say you should sleep naked. Always wear a easy fit short and any comfy top. Its all a matter of tuning your body into the tolerant temperature zone. If you make a habit of sleeping naked, there is not much scope to remove anything more when you feel extremely hot. Occassionally when u feel very hot, sleep naked and then you will feel very comfortable

I sleep with the windows open, a ceiling fan going full blast and a tower fan aimed at the foot of the bed.

Try having a hot bath before you go to sleep, it will help your body adjust to the heat, also try sleping starkers with just a sheet over you

just point the fan at yourself while you're asleep. What's unsafe about that... unless the wiring is exposed or the fan is really old or something. You could also just invite me over, things'll cool down right quick.
