A manager needs to know more than just how to manage people. A good manager has the ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment, including being able to keep up on future technology which will affect his business.

Many companies operate under a "ten-year plan", meaning they pretty much have an idea where they want to be in the next ten years. A good manager with an eye to the future can forsee this accurately.
