all settlements along the slopes do not lead to landslides. its only when the land in which the houses r being built are sandy or crumbled only then it leads to landslides. this happens when too many houses r built on these slopes the pressure which these houses exert on the land is very large thus the land starts slidin down causin landslides also gravitation also has a major part in landslides being caused. when the slopes become weak its due to gravity that they slide down causin landslides. thus its recommended that many tress should be grown if houses r being built cuz the roots bind the soil together keepin it strong and intact. but to avoid this happenenin settlement along the slopes should be avoided and if being built they should have a good foundation and many barriers should be made to avoid the land from slidin down.

let's say that if you lived on a slope, you'd be living in houses or huts at least right? you'll also need space to build your hut, and for food, if you don't live near a mcdonald's and you have to live off your own produce, such as rice or corn, you'll need space to grow something, therefore with the above situation in mind, you'll have to chop down a whole shitload of trees to make space to grow your food, in the meantime, if it rains a hell lot, the water that percolates into the ground will cause the soil to loosen and thus you get a landslide. Trees actually hold the soil together and therefore if there are no trees, the soil becomes loose and it's bye bye to your little hut. :P
this answer might be a little brief so you'll have to do some more research.

Actually, the settlements requires the vegetation (grass and trees) to be cut. This is the reason the landslides occur during rain, as the water just washes the land away, instead of being absorbed by the vegetation, and also the vegetation helps to secure the land in place by means of their roots

to make settlements on the mountain slopes large scale deforestation takes place ,so the mud or soil that was held by roots of the trees is left loose and becomes easily eroded by various weathering agent like rain, snow ,wind etc. and hence cause landslides.

There is nothing to hold the soil down. Cutting down of trees lead to environmental damage. The roots of the trees and plants hold down soil. The soil having been there for centuries have been packed down. When we cut down the trees and plants, we loosen the soil. Though we pour concrete and pack it in, deep down the soil is still loose. When water starts flowing the soil underneath starts getting washed away and the whole hillside or mountainside can collapse.

2 things, water and lack of root structure, when trees are forested then roots die and no longer provide support for the soil. sort of like re bar in concrete, also in times of heavy rain, water saturates the soil and "floats it off the side of the mountain.
