well I believe you have a yahoo ID
Then download a yahoo messenger at: http://messenger.yahoo.com/
enter your yahoo ID and password as usual
click on the contacts menu and click on add a contact or press ctrl+shift+a on your keyboard, type your friends email address (must be yahoo fo now) and press enter key. press enter again. wait for 10 seconds and press another enter: Hurray your friend is added on your messenger list.
click on the name of your friend on the messenger list and press enter.
You then have just IM'ed your friend

IM stands for instant messaging. Its kinda like a quicker e-mail system. You should have Yahoo!Messenger to be able to do this. You will know if you do by the little smiley face at the very bottom of your computer. I don't think you're dumb, not everybody knows about all this stuff. It's hard to keep up with sometimes.

Most internet service providers like Yahoo, AOL, MSN, etc. provide their own form of instant messaging service. You usually have to download (install) a special program so you can communicate with others.
Whatever internet service you have, I'm sure they have a Help page. You can find out how to sign up, if your computer needs a certain amount of memory or speed, etc.

Instant Messenger. It is the software u use for chatting eg yahoo, redifbol etc. You be online and chat to ur counterpart two-way live; video or voice or text or collectivly. Both of you need to sign up on the same IM.
u can use ur yahoo id as ur yahoo IM id too n then ask ur friend also to signup with yahoo msnger. Now, both of u are connected!!
