Too much indeed - Costs about £14 from the centre of Birmingham to the outskirts of Birmingham.
Cheaper to get a train to new Street, then another train to Rugby.

I wouldn't get a taxi. From terminal 1 take the free monorail to Birmingham International railway station, which takes two minutes.
A single to Rugby is £5.40, or a £20 penalty fare if you don't buy a ticket before getting on the train. Journey time to Rugby is 20 minutes or so.

The best thing you have to do is to contact several taxi companies in Birmingham and choose among them. Here: "http://www.infotaxi.org/city-3237.htm" you will have a complete list of taxi companies that render service there.
Good luck and have a pleasant stay.
