Well I wouldn't say they are trying to be black, but they enjoy and appreciate our style. I would be flattered not bothered.

Im not really for or against this arguement but what is a "black" or "white" style?
I was under the impression that people could choose how they wanted to live their lives and dress/walk/talk however they feel comfortable.
Even though I like the whole hip hop scene its all just a faze but it has commercialised the whole gangsta/hip hop dress sense, which is why so many people are dressing in that style, its just white people look lame dressed like that.
If you look back in the earlier years when blacks didnt have the freedom and forced to live in the white society you would find that some of them used to try to dress/walk/talk like whites to "fit in". These days is still the same where people are trying to fit, its still social pressure that makes us so materialistic and leads us to copy other trends. If whites came up with their "own style" would that lead to further racism and segregation because people arent just being hated because the colour of their skin but for their "style" too? Who knows...
One day we'll all be wearing the same one-piece silver suit anyway...

As some have noted, it's a cultural choice.
When my son was 8, I started dating a black guy, so he was around black people and that culture a lot. He likes hip-hop (he listens to rock also, but he likes rap better) he also plays basketball, so many of his friends are black because he has a lot in common with them. He's asked his black friends if they consider him a wanna-be or wigger, but they find him to be genuine and have accepted him as he is.
I always raised him not to judge people by appearances or "styles". He was really annoyed when his friends from elementary school that had known him all his life started making comments about him when they got to Middle School because their interests were different.
When he started a new High School this year, there was another new kid that he couldn't stand at first, because he was into skateboarding and getting high. I reminded my son that he didn't like being judged, so he should not do it himself. They wound up becoming really good friends, and my son actually helped the other kid quit partying and to take better care of himself.
And what do you think of the blacks that straighten and lighten their hair and wear light colored contact lenses? And why do many blacks look down on those with very dark skin and prefer those with lighter skin (like in your avatar). Do you think they are trying to be white? No. Like all of us, the choice of clothing and hairstyle does reflect what we find appealing, attractive and comfortable (psychologically and/or physically).
It is an unfortunate, but very real, aspect of humans that we do make judgments based on appearance. Sociologically, it probably goes back to trying to attract a mate; but hopefully one day we'll overcome all that nonsense and learn to see beyond the hair, clothing, skin tone and eye color to the beauty that lies within each person.
Unfortunately, our consumerist society appears headed in the wrong direction for that-- look at how the celebrities are bigger news than the people struggling for food and freedom around the world. Look at how people buy bigger houses and bigger cars that keep us - as families and a society - further away from one another. Look at how few parents actually know their kids; and the kids are crying for attention, but the parents give them money instead.

You are talking about probably less than 2% of the youth population, and most of these white people you are talking about are probably what 15 yrs old to maybe 20. White folks and Black folks and Spanish folks all have their own styles and cultures, so I guess if you are insulted by a white teenager trying to act black maybe you should consider it a compliment?

If you grow up in a neighborhood that is mostly one culture or another, or if you hang around people of one style or another, you will tend to immitate that style, way of speaking, etc. I dont think is a white/black thing anymore. Espically if you watch MTV, hello???? Everything is hip-hop, urban, inner city, which-seems to be mostly black/latino, therefore people, whites included, tend to go for that because it seems to be popular. If you are black, you should be happy that people are buliding you up, not putting you down. Go back in time, not too long ago, things were very different.

I have always wondered why 80% of the population tries to copy the 20% that is supposed to be disadvantaged myself. It may be steriotyping. If the whites feel they can't compete with the wealthier whites that tend to be preppy, they join in with the disadvantaged because its easier, It realy only seems to happen in the urban areas, not so much the country
It could have a lot to do with music. You don't see much hip hop in the country, usually country or rock 'n rollers. The city tends to be filled with hip hop.

Imitating a certain style is not trying to become a part of the culture. I like to speak correct English and it burns me up when say I act "white". Each culture or race has something unique, cool or special about them that others just want to be a part of. That's all.

i think people just like other styles because being black isnt music being black is being black ...black is a color....for instance i'm black and i think peach is a really nice color but theres no way i could ever try to be peach.....so whites just like the style that most black people have.....everybody have there own style people just havent discoverd theres so they wanna be like somebody else...remem we all are unique so why be like somebody else when nobody can be like you. take for example if you speak proper english thats considered talking white but really thats just proper english

I think Rap and Hip Hop made that happen when those two music genre's got mainstreamed it opened up a door to allow White kids to imitate the Rap and Hip Hop artist that they admire.
