A kitchen spatula is used to scrape the inside of a bowl (ex. making brownies, cakes etc) so it goes into the pan. Whereas, if you use your fingers it generally ends up in your mouth (or at least I would hope so!). As for a kitchen scraper, I have seen it used in the same manner as a spatula but also to clean out pans that have really stuck on food that won't come out. BTW, if you do you have food that is REALLY stuck/burnt on, try this trick: fill the pan with a little soap, Electrasal dishwasher granulars and HOT water. Let soak overnight. Works like a charm.

I grew up a loyal spatula user.
I don't have any now because I threw away (actually gave away) EVERYTHING in my kitchen gadget drawer when I got married because I received EVERYTHING except an egg slicer and ...SPATULA set.
Any dish/dessert with a pudding like consistency can only be completely consumed or reached with a spatula. They are also good for frosting desserts and coating meats with sauces and gravies.
Basicallly, they effect your YUM quotient, but are otherwise unnecessary. A flat back spoon works as a substitute, but is just not a flexible as a scraper.
Have fun!

They are used to get the last bit of material clinging to a mixing bowl of in a can.

If you don't use one you will throw away a lot of food.
