a lot of animals will kill or eat their young if they feel they are threatened.. if there are other hamsters in the cage, mama thinks she needs to eat her babies before the other hamsters get to them and cause them to die of a worse fate- same with cats- mother cats have been known to kill their own kittens if there's a mean tomcat around. Just make sure they're alone in their cage and you don't disturb the babies and you let her do her thing for the first couple weeks and you'll be fine.

I have a book on hamsters and it says that they eat their young because of over crowding, so make sure their space and food for those that live. Other reasons are: Too frequent breeding, Protein defiency, Stillborn or weak young, and changes in the environment.

It's a defense mechanism. Your mom hamster obviously feels that something is threatening her young. This could be the male hamster's smell, or even the presence of humans.

cuz they taste like chicken;) LOL hopefully sarcasm doesn't offend you, but anyway on the serious side, I have heard that it's wise to separate the newborns immediately before the breeders have a chance to eat them, I know not why, only that they do,so try to save them before they're consumed.

i have always heard that they do that because they think that they are not healthy so , not letting them suffer, they put them out of their mysery.
