Pads are good when you don't know when you are going to have a period or not. They protect your panties from the spotting.
Tampons are a very good alternative, however should only be used when you are actually having a period. The reasons for this are well discussed in other Yahoo!Answer threads. You may want to search for "tampon" and read what other people have asked and said.

You have to use pads for at least the first 2 years of your period to get used to your flow. After that you can use tampons.
